2007 Top Ten Law Schools with the Best Overall Academic Experience
Provided by The Princeton Review
| |
The quality of your academic experience at law school will be influenced by a number of factors. Are your professors good teachers and are they accessible outside of class? What is the quality of the research resources at your school and are there a wide range of courses available? Does the curriculum strike a balance between legal theory and practical lawyering skills, and are diverse opinions respected in the classroom? These are just some of the things The Princeton Review looked at to come up with the schools on this list. According to The Princeton Review’s annual survey of 17,000 law school students at the nation’s Best 170 Law Schools these ten schools offer their students the best overall academic experience.
- Stanford University (Stanford, California)
Stanford University School of Law is a serious school with a sunny disposition. Students enjoy a lot of “hand-holding and personal attention” from their professors, and rave about the school’s posh facilities: “We basically go to school at an executive country club!” In addition, there’s “a real feel of camaraderie” on campus, making for a “Happy and relaxed atmosphere.” - University of Chicago (Chicago, Illinois)
The University of Chicago Law School is a theoretical hothouse “where Socrates meets The Matrix.” “There’s a clear emphasis on learning how to think about the law, not just to learn the cases.” Students also praise the “open-door policies of almost all faculty members, which means that learning is not confined to the classroom.” As one student sums up: “I can’t imagine a better legal education anywhere.” - University of Virginia (Charlottesville, Virginia)
The University of Virginia School of Law’s stellar academics have everything to do with the quality of the professors who teach there. One student raves: “I’ve never met such devoted teachers, interesting individuals, and talented academic minds!” “State-of-the-art” facilities and “an extensive library system” round out the school’s excellent academic offerings. - Georgetown University (Washington, DC)
Georgetown University Law Center is a lion among law schools—huge, prestigious, and located smack in the heart of the “political center of the world.” Students here appreciate their professors not just for their formidable resumes and vast knowledge, but also for their dynamic presentation of the material. As one student explains, “Class is always engaging; I don’t skip for fear I’ll miss something fun or memorable.” - Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles, California)
Whether dropping the names of celebrity alumni or discussing the high quality of their academic program, Loyola Marymount students sing their school’s praises. The school’s “brilliant and accessible” teaching staff draws praises for being able to “communicate the complex clearly. They’re also a damned funny lot.” - Washington and Lee University (Lexington, Virginia)
Students at “top-notch” Washington and Lee University School of Law speak of their academic experience in exceptionally glowing terms. Classes are “small,” the administration “really listens to the students,” the library staff and computer facilities are “excellent,” and the faculty-to-student ratio is “very low.” - Brigham Young University (Provo, Utah)
Brigham Young University’s J. Reuben Clark Law School offers students “a high-quality legal education” whose cornerstone is “”capable, caring, and charismatic” professors. “Students are taught the impact their work will have on their families and communities” and “classes are rich with debate.” Classrooms boast “electrical outlets at each seat,” and the library is one of the “most technologically advanced in the nation.” - University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Michigan)
Students at the University of Michigan Law School “will have an amazingly intense academic experience.” Michigan’s professors are “entertaining floating orbs of brilliance and insight, brain ninjas at the top of their legal specialties who are the experts in their respective fields.” They “present dry topics with a great sense of humor and in a way that challenges traditional ways of thinking.” - University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
The “venerable, world-class” University of Pennsylvania offers students “a wide range of options for every student’s taste.” Penn’s “state-of-the-art” library has “every reference you might ever need,” and many “beautiful, modern classrooms” have been added in recent years. - Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois)
Northwestern University’s School of Law boasts “world-class clinics, a great litigation focus,” and internship and externship opportunities galore. “The school does a fabulous job of providing opportunities for students to work in legal clinics, state attorneys’ offices and judges’ chambers.” “Extremely intelligent professors” and “absolutely gorgeous facilities” complete the picture.
