Choices:

B. either of the parts were acceptable
C. either part is acceptable
D. either part was acceptable
E. either of the acceptable parts



The original contains an error of pronoun subject-verb disagreement. Either is a singular subject and must pair with a singular form of the verb to be. (B) contains the original error. (D) changes the meaning because it places the action in the past. (E) is wrong because it fails to include a verb, thus forming a fragment.
