PSAT: Math Question #3

Skip to Question: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7  | Next Question

Question: A baker's helper earns 9 dollars per hour, including lunch and break time. This week, he works from 4 a.m. to noon on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday and from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. How much money did the baker's helper earn this week?

Choices:
A. $36
B. $216
C. $324
D. $350
E. $369

The correct answer is (C).

First calculate the total number of hours the helper worked:

8 hours each day on Mon., Tues., and Fri. = (8)(3) = 24 hrs

6 hours each day on Wed. and Thurs. = (6)(2) = 12 hrs

Total hours worked = 36 hours

Then multiple hours worked by the hourly wage:

36 hours x $9/hour = $324 earned this week.
