PSAT: Improving Sentences Question #4

Skip to Question: 1 2 3 4 5  | Next Question

When the first quarter ended, the home team were leading by ten points.

Question: The underlined portion of the sentence is rephrased in several different ways below. Choose the phrasing that would make the sentence the most accurate and effective. (A) represents leaving the sentence as is.

Choices:
A. were leading by ten points
B. leads by ten points
C. is leading by ten points
D. was leading by ten points
E. has a ten-point lead

The correct answer is (D).

The collective noun team when thought of as a unit takes a singular verb. "were" is plural so you can rule out (A).

Since the first verb ("ended")is past tense, the second must also reflect past time ("was leading"). Choices (B), (C), and (E) are all present tense.
