PSAT: Improving Sentences Question #3

Skip to Question: 1 2 3 4 5  | Next Question

Lou, a tenor in the men's chorus, sings better than any tenor in the chorus.

Question: The underlined portion of the sentence is rephrased in several different ways below. Choose the phrasing that would make the sentence the most accurate and effective. (A) represents leaving the sentence as is.

Choices:
A. than any tenor
B. than any other tenor
C. then any tenor
D. of all the tenors
E. then the tenors

The correct answer is (B).

Since you are comparing two things, "than" is used. "Then" refers to things that happen sequentially in time. That narrows your choices to (A) and (B).

(A) is confusing because if Lou was better than "any tenor", he would be better than himself as well! "..any other tenor" makes this sentence the most clear.
