PSAT: Improving Sentences Question #1

Skip to Question: 1 2 3 4 5  | Next Question

When I was riding on the bus to school, my best friend comes and sits besides me.

Question: The underlined portion of the sentence is rephrased in several different ways below. Choose the phrasing that would make the sentence the most accurate and effective. (A) represents leaving the sentence as is.

Choices:
A. comes and sits besides me
B. comes and sits beside me
C. came and sat beside me
D. came and sat besides me
E. comes to sit beside me

The correct answer is (C).

The first verb ("was riding") sets the time for the verbs to follow ("came" and "sat"); choices (A), (B), and (E) shift from past to present tense.

Choice (D) incorrectly uses "besides", which means in addition to, in place of "beside", which means close to.
