GRE: Quantitative Comparison Question #1

Skip to Question: 1 2 3  | Next Question

5 positive even integers have a sum of 150.

Column A Column B
The average (arithmetic mean) of the 5 positive even integers
The median of the 5 positive even integers

Choices:
A. The quantity in Column A is greater
B. The quantity in Column B is greater
C. The two quantities are equal
D. The relationship cannot be determined from the information given

Choice (D) From the centered information, we know that 30 is the value for Column A. This is because:
 Average   =
 Sum of Terms
 Number of Terms
 Average   =
150
3
 Average   =  30

We can pick numbers to figure out possibilities for Column B. It would be easy to make the 2 columns equal by either making all 5 integers 30 or by making them consecutive (even) with 30 as the middle value. If we eliminate 30 form the set in any way and still have the sum equal 150 (e.g.: 10, 10, 20, 40, 70), the median will be either less than (as in this case) or greater than 30. Anytime more than one result is possible the answer will be (D).
