B. Statement (2) BY ITSELF is sufficient to answer the question, but statement (1) by itself is not.
C. Statements (1) and (2) TAKEN TOGETHER are sufficient to answer the question, even though NEITHER statement BY ITSELF is sufficient.
D. EITHER statement BY ITSELF is sufficient to answer the question.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TAKEN TOGETHER are NOT sufficient to answer the question, and more data pertaining to the problem is required.

You are given a range of values for s, and you are asked if s is positive. That is not much to go on, so go to the statements. You are given a range of values for s, and you are asked if s is positive. That is not much to go on, so go to the statements.
 Statement (1):  s  ×  s  >  4  if  s  =  2  or if  s  =  -2.  Since  s  could be either
positive or negative, Statement (1) is not sufficient to answer the question.
 Statement (2): In order for  1  ÷  s  to be greater than  1  ÷  3, s  must be
positive. So Statement (2) by itself is sufficient.
