Question: On Farm X, farmworkers work 6 days per week and earn $23.00 per day, plus $0.74 per bushel filled. If a certain farmworker earned $165.38 in a week, how many bushels did she fill in that week?

Choices:
A. 7
B. 31
C. 37
D. 68
E. 192

 The correct answer is C. 
  
 The work week is six days and each day a minimum of $23.00 is 
 earned. So without filling any bushels, the worker will earn 
6  ×  $23.00  =  $138.00.  You can think of that as a base salary. 
  


The extra money earned by filling bushels is the remainder of her pay for the week, or $165.38 - $138.00 = $27.38. That's the total "bonus" based on bushels.
 Since each bushel earns $0.74, you can find the number of 
 bushels filled by dividing the total ($27.38) earned by the pay per 
 bushel ($0.74).  $27.38  ÷  $0.74  =  37,  so she filled 37 bushels.
