BEST AND BRIGHTEST?
Acceptance rates may average over 60 percent, but don't accept the conventional slam that education students come from the bottom of the barrel. A study by ETS found students intending to pursue secondary education scored above average on the GRE test's verbal and analytical sections.
ELEMENTARY, MY DEAR WATSON.
GRE scores of students looking to pursue elementary education are lower than their secondary-bound peers. Many schools separate their programs between secondary and elementary ed; applying to teach lower grades could boost your chances.
TAKE THE PRAXIS.
Many states require this test for teacher certification. It's also increasingly a requirement for education schools. Look for sample questions and study tips on the ETS website, www.ets.org.
CAREER CHANGERS.
Coming into teaching from another career is more and more common, and it is not a disadvantage-especially if your old job was math or science related, or if it gave you experience working with children who have disabilities.
