GET TO WORK.
Most M.B.A. programs want two to four years of job experience, and some place a premium on finding working-world veterans. At Wharton, for example, 99 percent of the class has three-plus years on the job.
TAKE THE GMAT.
It's not quite as painful as the SAT, but it's just as important, although it doesn't specifically address finance, economics, or accounting. Schools insist scores are just one of many factors they consider, but the vast majority of students at top institutions score 680 or better.
BEYOND BIZ.
So you were an English lit major in college and you want an M.B.A.? Don't sweat it. At the Stanford Graduate School of Business, only 21 percent of students have undergraduate degrees in business. Instead of letting your background dissuade you from applying, emphasize what your alternative experience will add to an M.B.A. program.
COMPARE OFFERINGS
Not all M.B.A. programs are created equal. Look for one that's right for you, if you know what you want to specialize in, like marketing or entrepreneurship. If not, check out more broadly based programs.
